My Answer

Bacteria has a negative connotation as people often associate it with disease and sickness only, but they fail to mention the benefits of bacteria. Bacteria is necessary for digestion in our gut microbiome; breaking down macromolecules. Fermentation in foods like yogurts and cheeses provides probiotic nutrients. The most obvious advantage of bacteria is immune system building, which is most important in the younger stages of life (such as toddlers and children). While there are various benefits of bacteria there are obvious adversities. Harmful bacteria can attack immune cells and make the person sick and when that does happen anti-biotic resistant bacteria involved in the sickness may lengthen getting better. Getting sick may come from other people, contaminated places, or contaminated food. E coli is a well known bacteria found in the microbiome of human's gut can be pathogenic and those infected may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps, vomiting, and in some case kidney problems. It is common to find e coli contaminants on food after people do not wash their hands, so it is very preventable! I look forward to furthering my knowledge in future biology courses.
